Remembrance Sunday, 12th November 2023

In the bright early morning sunshine of Sunday 12th November, a group of diplomats, serving and ex-military personnel from many countries and society representatives gathered to pay their respects to the fallen and to those who returned at the beautiful Taiping War Cemetery in Perak. This is the second year in succession that the Remembrance Service has been held there, whilst Tugu Negara continues to be refurbished.

British High Commissioner HE Ailsa Terry CMG gave the welcome address. Capt. Tony Stockbridge, Defence Advisor to the British High Commission, read the extract below from Robert Binyon's For The Fallen. Two pipers from the Scottish and Northern Irish Yeomanry played a haunting Lament and the Last Post was played by Kai Xiang Tan. The two minutes silence, one for the fallen, the other for those who returned, was impeccably and respectfully observed.

President Ray Bolland laid a wreath on behalf of RSSG, alongside wreaths from the other Loyal Societies and organisations who had travelled up from KL. 

As always, the Service was run extremely well by the British High Commission Defence Team and there was time for reflection for all, before departing for breakfast at a nearby hotel and then homeward.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.
